Student engagement

Being a foreign language teacher to students looking to study in the United States, I try to bring a wealth of knowledge about American culture, study habits, note-taking, and language. In one year, I take my students on a journey to master the most important English vocabulary, and build on skills needed to study various subjects in the US. Test-taking is extremely important in Chinese culture, but I must prepare my students for American style testing, writing, and projects. Communication, speaking skills and classroom organization are also large parts of my curriculum at Beijing Haidian Foreign Language School.

Teamwork & a Sense of community

As part of a large International department, I work with my colleagues to develop new techniques and Western pedagogies within Asia. In 2018 we welcomed American Fulbright scholars working with the US Consulate General Guangzhou and the Regional English Language Office of the US Embassy to educate and share tools for better success in the classroom. Working as a team to provide the best education for our students, we all strive to add more to our lessons and efficiently get each child to a higher standard of English learning, in all subjects.

Cultural performances

For several years in a row, I have been tasked with helping multiple classrooms prepare and organize cultural performances. We practice skits, dance and singing routines, and public speaking. Each year I take part in these performances by either co-hosting these large productions, or joining in with my students as part of the show.

English activities outside of the classroom

As an English teacher and mentor at a Chinese boarding school, it's important that I give lessons outside of class hours, to fully engage students with English language activities. I have hosted Spelling Bees, numerous sports clubs, Math competitions, cooking events, Halloween, Christmas and Easter parties, award ceremonies, and more. I meet with my students regularly to give guidance and advice to succeed with their English education. Additionally, oral English examinations are given on a semester to semester basis.
